Chiesa di San Gaetano alle Grotte
Piazza Carlo Alberto 74, Catania
A 19th century Church, located at the entrance of the “Piazza da Fera o Luni”, first known as “Santa Maria alla Grotta”, then it was transferred to the Saint Gaetano friars and was named after them. Inside the church, you can reach a prehistoric volcanic cave, recognised as the burial of the Saint Agatha. In Paleo Christian age, the cave was used as a catacomb and then transformed into a chapel in the Byzantine period. Here you can admire an ancient pit reused as baptismal font, a small column carved into the rock and an arcosolium. Interesting 16th century frescos are still visible on the walls, even if severely damaged.
